3/1/2013 Letter from Mayor Gillian regarding FEMA Flood Maps

March 1, 2013

Dear Friends,

At the beginning of February I posted a letter expressing the Citys concerns regarding FEMAs new Advisory Base Flood Maps.  I wanted to provide an update on the Citys actions since early February.

The City has now developed a specific customer service team dedicated to assisting with questions about flood maps, FEMA and storm assistance.  Beginning later next week, we will have an employee staffed during regular business hours to field questions and offer guidance as well as a consultant who is an engineer and planner assisting with these calls.  This consultant is well versed in land use and the Citys ordinances.  We are hopeful that these employees can assist residents, businesses and local contractors with navigating the recent changes to base flood elevation maps and the impact on local ordinances.

City Council did award a contract to the coastal engineering consulting firm Atkins at their February 14th  meeting.  City staff has begun meeting with Atkins representatives to initiate the approach with FEMA in order to correct the inaccuracies on the recently issued flood maps.

We are optimistic that there will be changes to the maps, so I would also like to remind you that, if you can, please take your time and do not rush construction decisions.  I would also like to remind you to that it is imperative that you contact a professional when developing a course of action.  Our local architects, engineers and construction professionals are familiar with local regulations and requirements, and are knowledgeable about the new maps.

Lastly, if you have any questions or concerns please contact City Hall at 399-6111, or the new City Customer Care team directly at 525-9404.

Warm regards,

Jay A. Gillian
Mayor

1/23/2013 OC is Open for Business
OCEAN CITY IS OPEN FOR VISITORS,
PLEASE HELP PASS THE WORD

Ocean City has made a remarkable comeback from Hurricane Sandy. The Boardwalk and Downtown are in good shape and we were able to accommodate 8,000 visitors during our New Year's Eve First Night Celebration.

Thanks to the tireless work of OCNJCARE, our super volunteer organization, its community partners and the City, this basic recovery was made possible. These groups continue to provide assistance to those who need help and will do so until the job is completed.

It is very important that we get the word out to our visitors that we are open and ready to accommodate them now and for the upcoming season. Our Tourism industry revenues help keep the City tax base in check and also contribute substantially to the State's Treasury and tax base.

We have already held a press conference with area media explaining that Ocean City is prepared to accommodate visitors. We asked folks at First Night to spread the word that Ocean City is open when they returned home. Now we are asking you.

There is still a perception among many throughout our marketing area that the entire Jersey Shore is devastated. When you talk to out of town friends, let them know that we are in business. Email your friends. If you are on face book or any other social media, post it on your page. If you tweet, by all means tweet it. If you are in business include this information in your advertisements and correspondence, in your telephone conversations etc. Word of mouth is one of the most effective methods of communication. Please pass the word.

Also keep in mind that in February, the Army Corps of Engineers will be back for their regular visit to dredge our beaches and replace sand to upgrade our beaches.

Please remember that if you would like to assist OCNJCARE in its on-going efforts you may send a check   to OCNJCARE, Po Box 807, Ocean City, N.J. 08226 or drop it off at Ocean City Home Bank, 10th and Asbury Ave.

from the OC Chamber of Commerce
1/18/2013 2013 Economic Forecast: Brady Sees Great Year for Ocean City Tourism

Ocean City Home Bank President Steve Brady delivers his annual economic forecast to the Ocean City Chamber.

In his 21st annual economic forecast for the Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce, Ocean City Home Bank President Steve Brady said he sees a great opportunity for the local tourist economy to thrive even as the national economy lumbers along.

Brady addressed a couple hundred business owners and professionals at a luncheon at the Flanders Hotel on Thursday afternoon (Jan. 17).

With much of the rest of the Jersey Shore devastated by Superstorm Sandy, Brady predicted "another bounty year in Ocean City for tourism."

Echoing comments from Chamber Executive Director Michele Gillian, Brady said, "We need to get the word out that we are up and running."

Gillian had opened the meeting with a plea for all Chamber members to mention to anybody and everybody that Ocean City is "open for business." She noted that the Ocean City Tourist Development Commission had just approved a major advertising buy in North Jersey, where the Oct. 29 storm left substantially more damage to shore resort towns.

Brady was interrupted by applause when he mentioned what a great job the local government did in cleaning up and helping Ocean City recover from the storm. The southern New Jersey shore towns are expected to be at full capacity to accept summer visitors.

Reviewing the year 2012, Brady said he saw signs of recovery in the real estate market with only 734 unsold units on the market at the end of the year, down from 963 at the close of 2011. At the same time, the average sales price went up from $564,000 in 2011 to $576,000 in 2012, he said. Building permits issued climbed from 115 to 150.

Among positive developments in 2012, Brady pointed out:

  • The opening of the Revel casino in Atlantic City.
  • The completion of the Route 52 causeway between Somers Point and Ocean City.
  • The Ocean City BYOB initiative being settled with the public rejecting it at the polls.
  • The opening of the gallery of boutiques at Stainton's on Asbury Avenue in Ocean City.
  • A strong summer season for the Ocean City tourist economy.
  • Ocean City's ability to bring 8,000 people to town for its First Night celebration on New Year's Eve, just two months after Superstorm Sandy struck.

For 2013, Brady expects to see the region benefit from the development of the Harrah's Conference Center, Margaritaville casino (Resorts) and a Bass Pro Shops outlet (The Walk) in Atlantic City. He said reconstruction in the aftermath of Sandy will bring new jobs to the state.

On a national level, Brady sees more obstacles to overcome as the economy moves toward recovery including partisan politics, a crushing national debt and an overbearing regulatory environment.
